In my final project, we were designing a community in Preston, our goal was to form the community with the agenda ‘Beyond Housing’, outlined through five focus points:
• Collaborative Housing
• Spatial Adaptability
• Individual and Collective
• Inside and Outside
• Apartment and House
and in my case, I addressed these with more focus on affordable housing.
Container Housing
Our living environment is deteriorating due to human actions, specifically climate change, deforestation, pollution, and excessive carbon emissions. This has created an urgent need for more environmentally-friendly and renewable living solutions to address the pressing challenges we face.
Additionally, the advancements in technology and evolving societal needs require a more dynamic and interactive approach to community design.
To address these challenges, I propose four methods. Firstly, utilize recycling container boxes as basic building blocks, repurposing discarded materials to create an eco-friendly community. This approach promotes sustainability and minimizes waste and contributes to a circular economy. Secondly, employ a flexible and upgrading building system that allows for adaptability to changing needs, fostering a resilient and future-proof living environment. Additionally, by encouraging customization and offering diverse housing options, we create a vibrant and resilient community that caters to individual preferences. Lastly, integrate off-grid systems and regenerative practices, such as closed-loop food circles, to eliminate carbon emissions and promote self-sustainability. Through these measures, we strive to build a resilient and environmentally-conscious community for a brighter future.
We learnt how to design for clients through site investigation 、client investigation and the process of amending and polishing our design to find the best solution. Based on those, I formed my design concepts and massing. To help with better future, I personally like more environmental building system, so I researched and formed bellow closed - loop system. Although that's very new and challenging the building system, I believed we should do more for the earth and ourselves.
In this subject, I learnt more about the purpose of drawings, and the focus of it as well, In my design, I'm more concerned about the time progression and the flexibility of the house, also the physical structure, which is upgraded with time and easy to grow.
To make the building more efficient and less costly, I applied the simplest linear arrangement after trying several kinds of methods. To push this idea furthermore, I introduced the raw brutalism aesthetic style with pure steel structure and container skin.
